Before I became interested in violin I wanted to be a ballerina and gymnast. Becoming a violinist is like being an athlete because you must train regularly. There are small muscles groups and large muscle groups. Teachers emphasize posture the most on the beginning because it is so very important to be balanced and relaxed. The slightest motion with off beat breathing or a sense of frustration can effect your concentration.
I train with Capoeira Angola Palmares in the Pacific Northwest as another creative outlet. Many of the skills we do to warm up are organic and fun. Much of the work we do to train our muscles are in the lower zone. However, I wanted to share with you these centering exercises before you practice so that you can relax and go within.
